回溯 Switchfoot 的音乐历程，就得从90年代中期的圣地亚哥海滩说起。Jon Foreman 与 Chad Butler参加冲浪比赛时结识，因彼此对音乐的热爱，决定组成摇滚乐团。以冲浪术语 Switchfoot 为团名（指冲浪时改变脚在冲浪板上的位置，取得新的方向来驾驭浪势），开始在自家的车库开始苦练，然后到处巡回演唱。在经过近 20 场的演唱磨练后，1997 年签入独立厂牌 Re：Think，发行他们的第一张专辑 Legend of Chin。在每年平均150场的巡回演唱，Switchfoot 在独立厂牌发行3张唱片总共销售了40万张唱片。加入哥伦比亚唱片的第一张专辑【The Beautiful Letdown】，则成为他们成军以来销售速度最快的专辑。

【The Beautiful Letdown】由 John Fields（曾制作Andrew W.K）制作，Chris Lord-Alge（Goo Goo Dolls、Michelle Branch）、Tom Lord-Alge（Blink-182、Rolling Stones）、Jack Joseph Puig（John Mayer、No Doubt）这些名家坐镇混音。【The Beautiful Letdown】发行后便进入告示榜专辑榜Top16，并以单曲『Meant To Live』获得摇滚榜 Top13 及流行单曲榜 Top19，MV是由曾拍摄 Radiohead(电台司令) MV 的Laurent Briet 掌镜。
